ER3401 Transportation Engineering Syllabus:
ER3401 Transportation Engineering Syllabus – Anna University Regulation 2021
Course Objective:
The objective of this course is to provide foundational knowledge on the planning, design, and construction of various transportation systems including highways, railways, airports, and harbours. It aims to equip students with the principles of geometric design, alignment, and functional elements of transportation infrastructure, while also familiarizing them with modern techniques and standards used for effective infrastructure development.
Unit-I Highway Engineering
Institutions for Highway planning- Classification of highways- Typical cross sections of Urban and Rural roads- factors influencing highway alignment- Engineering surveys for alignment Conventional and Modern method.
Unit-II Design of Highway Elements
Cross sectional elements – Horizontal curves, super elevation, transition curves, widening of curves – Sight distances – Vertical curves, gradients– pavement types, components and their role.
Unit-III Railway Engineering
Permanent way – Gauges – Components – Functions and requirements – Geometric designUrban Rail Transit Planning – MRTS – LRTS, Metro Rail – Monorail.
Unit-IV Airport Engineering
Aircraft characteristics – -airport classification- airport site selection- typical Airport Layouts, Airport obstructions and zoning – Runway – Orientation of Runways and correction factors as ICAO stipulations, taxiways and aprons- Terminal area planning
Unit-V Harbour Engineering
Docks and Harbours – Types – Layout and planning principles- breakwaters – docks wharves and quays – Transit sheds- warehouses- navigation aids
Course Outcomes:
1. Remember the institutions of highway planning and conventional and modern methods of engineering surveys for alignment fixing
2. Design the cross-section elements, sight distance, horizontal and vertical alignment
3. Remember the different elements/components of the Railway/Airport/Harbour/Urban Transit
4. Understand site selection, the functions of different components of the Railway/Airport/Harbour, the methods of construction of the railway and its components and visual aids
5. Design the geometry/layout of the Railway/Airport/Harbour and its components.
