High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamp:

A lamp which produces light by passing electricity through gas, which causes the gas to glow. Examples are mercury vapour lamps, metal halide lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps, etc. Such lamps emit very high intensity light compared to fluorescent lights and also have a very long life.
